My First Ghost Encounter That Changed Everything
When people ask me how I became a psychic medium, they often expect a story filled with light, angels, and graceful awakenings. But like a lot of others, my spiritual path started with fear.
This is the story of my very first ghost encounter that both awakened and shut down my psychic abilities for years.
I’m sharing this not to scare you, but to help you understand something that many developing mediums go through: that your fear of spirit often hides your calling to connect with them.
The Night It All Began
I was 16 years old, staying at my dad’s house in a small countryside village in Germany. It was an old, charming home with creaky floors and pitched wooden ceilings, the kind of place that always seemed to whisper secrets through the walls.
The attic had been turned into a loft bedroom, and that’s where I was sleeping. It felt cozy… until it didn’t.
That night, around 3 a.m., I woke up with a strange awareness that someone else was in the room. Half asleep, I peeked out from under my duvet and froze.
There she was.
A young girl standing beside my bed.
She wasn’t solid like you and me. She looked almost gray and hazy, wearing what seemed to be an old-fashioned nightdress. Her hair moved as if a breeze were blowing through it, even though the air was still. She didn’t say a word, but her presence filled the room.
And me? I was absolutely terrified.
When Fear Becomes the Wall
At that age, my only reference for ghosts was what I’d seen on television, The Sixth Sense, horror movies, haunted house stories. So naturally, I thought I was in danger.
My heart pounded as I hid under the blanket, too afraid to move, too afraid to breathe. She stood between me and the door.
I stayed there until the sun came up.
When morning light finally touched the room, she was gone. But the fear stayed.
The Energy That Stayed Behind
Trying to shake off what had happened, I went downstairs and began cleaning. (Anyone who processes energy through cleaning, you get it!) I was scrubbing the kitchen when my stepmother came down, furious, saying she’d been woken up by loud banging noises coming from the attic half an hour ago.
But I had been downstairs for over an hour.
That was when I realised that whatever energy had been up there wasn’t done moving.
How That Experience Shut Down My Abilities
That encounter became the catalyst for what I now understand as my first psychic shutdown.
At 16, I didn’t know that what I saw was a spirit energy, not something to be afraid of. I thought it was a “ghost,” and that meant something bad. So, I did what most people do when they’re afraid: I subconsciously closed my connection to spirit.
From that moment, I decided I didn’t want to “see” anything again. And for years, I didn’t.
But shutting down your psychic senses doesn’t make them disappear. It just pushes them deeper until life (and spirit) decides you’re ready again.
What I Know Now as a Psychic Mediumship Mentor
Looking back, I can see that young girl not as a haunting, but as a teacher. She was a mirror for what I needed to understand later in life. That fear is the gateway to your spiritual awakening.
When I mentor developing mediums inside my Modern Mediumship Academy, I often hear stories just like mine:
“I saw something when I was young, and it scared me.”
“I used to sense energy, but I shut it off.”
“I was told it was bad or evil.”
If that’s you, please know this: Your ability isn’t gone. It’s simply waiting to be remembered.
Spirit will be waiting to meet you when you’re ready. And when you learn to understand your sensitivity through grounded, modern tools.
Ghosts, Energy, and the Truth About Spirit
So do I still believe in ghosts? Yes, but not in the Hollywood sense.
There are two kinds of energy people often confuse:
Residual energy – a kind of echo left behind in a place. This can feel like a “haunting,” but it’s simply energy replaying itself.
Spirit visitation – a loved one’s soul connecting directly with you to send comfort, guidance, or love.
The young girl I saw that night was part of the house’s energy, not someone attached to me personally. Later, I learned that my stepmother had even invited a priest to bless the home because of previous strange occurrences.
The Long Road Back to Reconnection
For many years, I lived disconnected from my intuitive self. I rationalised every subtle sign, the flicker of energy in my peripheral vision, the feeling of someone standing near me.
My logical mind took over:
 “Oh, it’s just my glasses.”
 “It’s just my imagination.”
It wasn’t until I was 31 and pregnant with my first daughter that my psychic abilities reawakened. My heart was opening in a new way, and spirit found a gentle path back in.
Pregnancy is often a powerful time for psychic reactivation. You're literally creating life, so your energy field becomes deeply attuned to the unseen. That was my second awakening, and this time, the spark of curiosity started me slowing asking questions I had never dared ask.
Why So Many People Shut Down Their Psychic Abilities
You might relate to this story if you’ve ever:
Felt a presence in your room and panicked.
Sensed a loved one around you but dismissed it as “coincidence.”
Been told as a child to “stop making things up.”
Most of us were conditioned to fear what we don’t understand. Religion, culture, and media often frame spirit contact as “evil” or “unnatural.”
But connection with spirit isn’t strange. It’s our natural state.
The difference between fear and trust lies in education and energy boundaries. When you learn how to open your channel with intention, clarity, and protection, your connection feels safe, healing, and aligned.
If You’ve Shut Down, You Can Reopen
Here’s the message I want you to take from my first ghost encounter:
If you’ve closed your intuitive or mediumship abilities out of fear, you can always reopen them.
Your connection to spirit is like a radio signal. You may have turned down the volume, but the frequency is still there, waiting for you to tune back in.
Through modern mediumship, you can learn how to connect with loved ones in spirit, trust your intuition, and interpret signs, without rituals, rules, or fear.
That’s what I teach now: how to make mediumship simple, practical, and empowering.
Your Story Matters Too
That night in Germany was my Diary Entry #1 — the first chapter of my journey into the spirit world.
Now, I invite you to reflect:
When did you first sense spirit?
Was there a moment you decided to shut it off?
What would it feel like to safely open that door again?
If you’ve had a similar experience, I’d love to hear your story. Share your message, your memory, or your turning point, and I may feature it in a future episode of the Diary of a Medium podcast.
Because your story might be the one that helps another soul remember who they truly are.
Final Thoughts
The spirit world isn’t something to fear. It’s a mirror of love, healing, and remembrance. That young girl didn’t appear to harm me; she appeared to awaken me.
Even when fear shuts the door, spirit patiently waits on the other side.
And when you’re ready to open it again, they’ll meet you with light.
