Psychic vs. Mediumship – What’s the Real Difference?
Have you ever found yourself wondering…
“Am I psychic… or am I a medium?”
“What’s the actual difference?”
“How do I even know if I’m making it all up?”
You’re not alone! These questions come up all the time in my masterclasses.
Let’s break this down in a straightforward, no-fluff way, shall we? (Because that’s how we roll around here!)
🔮 What Is Psychic Ability?
Being psychic simply means tuning into the energy of the person or situation in front of you. You’re connecting with someone’s aura, their energy field, and their life experience – past, present, or even potential future events.
It’s like being a spiritual detective – but the clues are in the vibes, feelings, and impressions you pick up on from the other person’s field.
So… What Can You “See” Psychically?
-
Emotions they’re holding
-
Decisions they’re weighing up
-
Patterns they might not even be aware of yet
-
Potential futures (based on current energies)
-
Insights about places or situations (yes – rooms, houses, even land holds energy!)
Psychics often receive guidance through:
-
Clairvoyance (seeing in the mind’s eye)
-
Clairsentience (feeling energy or emotion)
-
Clairaudience (hearing messages)
-
Claircognizance (just knowing something without knowing how)
Sound familiar?
👻 And What Is Mediumship Then?
Mediumship is when we intentionally connect to the Spirit World.
We're not reading the energy of the person in front of us anymore – we’re reaching up and outward to connect with someone who has passed over.
It’s like changing the channel on a radio.
With mediumship, we’re connecting to:
-
Loved ones in Spirit
-
Ancestors
-
Guides
-
Sometimes even pets!
The messages we receive are about the spirit communicator – who they were, memories, personality traits, cause of passing, and the relationship they had with the person sitting in front of us.
Here's My Analogy:
When I’m reading psychically, it’s like I’m leaning forward into someone’s energy.
When I’m working as a medium, it’s like I’m reaching upward to Spirit.
And you might feel it differently – that’s okay! There’s no one-size-fits-all here.
✨ Can You Do Both at the Same Time?
Absolutely. Lots of Psychic Mediums blend psychic and mediumship skills in a reading.
You might begin with tuning into the energy of your client and then shift into connecting with Spirit. The key is knowing the difference between the two so that:
-
You’re clear on where the information is coming from
-
You can stay in integrity and trust yourself
-
You can clearly communicate the origin of your messages to your clients
Clarity = Confidence.
“But Em… What if I’m Just Making It All Up?!”
Oh yes, that old friend. 😅
Here’s the thing: every single developing medium has had this thought.
What helped me build trust in myself (and Spirit) was creating a daily practice where I intentionally connected to Spirit – just for me.
Here's a simple practice you can try:
-
Sit in stillness (10–15 minutes is plenty)
-
Set the intention to connect with your own guides or loved ones
-
Ask for guidance for yourself
-
Notice how that connection feels – subtly different from your regular thoughts
-
Journal what comes through
Whether you’re still unsure if you’re psychic or medium (spoiler: you’re probably both), or you’re just starting to explore your intuitive abilities, know this:Mediumship is not just for the chosen few. It’s within you. You just need the right guidance and support.
