Can Anyone Become a Medium? The Truth Behind What Mediumship Really Is

Have you ever wondered if mediumship is something you’re either born with… or whether it’s something you can actually learn?

I used to ask myself the exact same thing. As a teenager, I’d watch John Edward on Crossing Over and think, “Wow, I wish I could do that.” I honestly believed mediumship was for the gifted, the “chosen ones.”

Spoiler alert: It’s not. Many people come into their Mediumship abilities later in life, often when they lose a loved one. This is exactly what happened to me, so yes, you absolutely can become a medium if you feel called to it.

Busting the Big Myth: The “Gift”

At the beginning of my journey, I found that the spiritual world felt so overwhelming; everywhere I turned, people were pushing their own agenda and dictating their own beliefs of what I MUST DO to work with Spirit.

“You need to meditate for hours.” (This filled me with dread as a mum of 3 young kids & a business to run)
“You have to sit in the power daily.” (What does that even mean?)
“You need to keep a symbol library, buy a baby book to learn names and a book of flags to learn the countries” (even tying this gives me anxiety)

BUT I tried all of that, and truthfully? It nearly made me give up before I even got going.

What I know now is that mediumship is about connection, not perfection. Everyone has intuition. You already use it in your everyday life, when you think of a friend and they suddenly text, or when you just know you shouldn’t take a certain road. Mediumship is simply learning to direct that intuition toward Spirit.

Why Anyone Can Do It

Think of mediumship like learning a language. Some people pick it up quickly, others take longer but anyone can learn if they wish to; it just takes practice and the right guidance.

  • If you’ve ever had goosebumps out of nowhere when thinking of a loved one…

  • Or felt like a song on the radio was just for you

  • Or had that deep “knowing” that you couldn’t explain…

…then you’re already connecting. You might not call it mediumship yet, but Spirit is trying to get your attention.

So What Is Mediumship Then?

Mediumship isn’t about fortune-telling or predicting the lottery numbers (I wish!). It’s about love, healing, and connection.

Sometimes Spirit comes through in pictures, sometimes in feelings, sometimes it’s just a quiet knowing. Your way will be as unique as you. There’s no one right way which is why copying someone else’s “method” often leaves people stuck.

Where Do You Start?

Here’s how I’d recommend you begin, without the fluff or overwhelm:

  • Notice the nudges. Keep a journal. Write down repeating numbers, feathers, songs, or those “weird coincidences.”
  • Trust your first impressions. That thing you dismiss as “just me” is often Spirit nudging you.
  • Practice instant connection. Instead of waiting for Spirit to pop in randomly, try asking: “Can I connect with the loved one my sitter wants to hear from?”
  • Look after your nervous system. A frazzled, stressed-out mind finds it harder to hear Spirit. Simple grounding, breathwork, or even a quick walk can make all the difference.

Quick FAQs

  • Do I have to meditate for hours?
Nope! Unless you love meditating, don’t force it. Spirit doesn’t need rituals — they just need you to be open and present.

  • What if I don’t see or hear anything?
That’s completely normal. Many mediums don’t see Spirit like a film reel. You might feel or just know. That’s valid.

  • Does it take years to become a medium?

Some say 5–7 years. I say nonsense. With the right guidance, you can be confidently reading within months. I went from “spiritual closet” to professional readings in under 12 months and my students have too.
