How to Protect Your Energy When Working With Spirit

When I first started connecting with Spirit, I was filled with excitement. Then almost overnight, that excitement turned into fear.

I started asking myself questions like:

What if I open a door I can’t close?
What if something dark comes through?

If you’ve ever felt that too, you’re not alone. Most people who open up to spirit feel both awe and fear in the beginning. The truth is, both feelings belong. You can hold curiosity and caution at the same time.

This is what I’ve learned after years of working with Spirit and mentoring others who are just starting out.

1. Fear is what opens the wrong door

People often ask me, “What if I connect to something dark?”

My answer is simple. Fear attracts more fear.

When your energy sits in worry or anxiety, that’s the frequency you start to match. The universe doesn’t read intention the way we think it does. It simply mirrors where your focus is.

The safest thing you can do is raise your own frequency. Choose calm, not fear. Focus on light, not on what you’re trying to avoid. Darkness can’t exist where light is fully present.

2. Intention is everything

Protection doesn’t need to be complicated. You don’t need a long ritual, or a special candle. Those things can feel comforting, but they aren’t the power. You are.

Before I begin any session, I say one clear statement in my mind:

“I open to Spirit for the highest good, and only to those who work in light.”

That’s it.

Say it with conviction. Believe it. Your energy field listens to you. When you mean what you say, Spirit respects the boundary.

3. You must know how to switch on and off

This is one of the biggest lessons for new mediums.

If you walk around open all day, Spirit will keep talking. You’ll start hearing, feeling, and sensing things when you’re trying to live a normal human life. It sounds interesting at first, until you realise you haven’t had a quiet moment in weeks.

Learning to switch off protects your peace.

When I start work, I consciously open my energy and invite Spirit in. When I’m finished, I close it down. I imagine a door shutting and thank my team for stepping back.

Your connection isn’t meant to control you. You get to decide when you’re available.

4. Your physical body is part of your protection

You can’t stay in a high vibration if your human life is falling apart.
If you’re exhausted, hungry, overwhelmed, or constantly in your head, your energy will drop.

Protection starts with ordinary self-care.
Sleep well.
Eat something real.
Take a walk.
Drink water with presence.
Spend a few minutes in gratitude.

The lighter your physical energy feels, the lighter the spiritual energy you attract.

5. How to actually connect with your spirit guides

When people try to meet their spirit guides, they often get stuck on surface questions like “What’s your name?” or “Can you send me a sign?”

Instead, ask something meaningful.
Ask, “What do I need to know for my highest good right now?”
Ask, “What are you here to help me with?”

Spirit guides are part of your soul team. Treat them like you would a mentor or a friend. Give the connection time to deepen. Don’t chase the answers. Let them reveal themselves when you’re ready to hear them.

6. Do spirits ever not want to connect?

I get this question a lot, and my honest answer is no, not really.

In my experience, Spirit always wants to connect. The block usually comes from the living person. Sometimes the person receiving the message isn’t ready, or there’s too much pain attached to that relationship.

It’s rare that a spirit doesn’t want to talk. More often, it’s that the sitter isn’t ready to listen.

As mediums, our job isn’t to force communication. It’s to create a safe space for it when both sides are ready.

7. Developing your Clairs takes practice, not waiting

Most people have one or two “Clairs” that come naturally. Maybe you feel energy more than you see it, or you know things without knowing how.

Don’t wait for the rest to magically switch on. Practice.

Join development circles. Try exercises that strengthen different clairs. Notice small intuitive hits throughout your day and act on them.

Every time you follow a nudge, you train your intuition to trust you. That’s how you get stronger.

8. When everything goes quiet

It happens to everyone. For a while, you’ll receive signs, messages, synchronicities — and then suddenly, silence.

You might think you’ve lost your gift. You haven’t. Spirit often steps back to give you space to integrate what you’ve learned.

In these moments, stop pushing for connection. Return to your own energy. Meditate. Go for a walk. Let yourself live. When you’re grounded again, the connection naturally returns.

9. A simple pre-session routine

If you like something practical, try this.

  1. Sit quietly and take three deep breaths.

  2. Say, “I am open to the highest frequencies of love and truth.

  3. Visualise your body filling with light until it surrounds you.

  4. Do your reading or your session.

  5. When you finish, thank your guides, take a few deep breaths, and imagine the light settling softly into your heart.

Simple. Clear. Enough.

10. Your boundaries with Spirit mirror your boundaries in life

This part is often overlooked.

If you have trouble saying no in your everyday life, you’ll likely struggle to set boundaries with Spirit too. They reflect your energy.

When you start setting clearer limits in your relationships, time, and energy, you’ll notice Spirit begins respecting your space more easily as well.

Everything mirrors everything.

The truth about protection

You are never powerless in your connection. Spirit doesn’t control you. You are not at the mercy of invisible forces.

You are a living, breathing channel of light.
The more grounded you are in your body and your boundaries, the clearer your connection becomes.

Working with Spirit should feel peaceful, not frightening.

Trust yourself. Trust the light you carry. That’s your protection.
